Emergency help and memory tips

As the snowbirds leave for warmer climates, we have had several emergency phones returned to the Senior Center by our summer friends. If you are an emergency phone client, who is leaving Cook County for more than a month this winter, please call the Senior Center at (218) 387-2660 to discontinue service. You may return your emergency phone and sensor to the Senior Center or we will disconnect it for you.

On the other hand, if you are staying in Cook County this winter and are concerned about summoning help for an accident or medical emergency, the Senior Center has emergency phones available for installation in your home. With the emergency phone you may summon a neighbor or ambulance to help you. You will also receive a sensor to wear as a pendant or wristband that you may press within fifty feet of the unit to summon help. All of the equipment remains the property of the Senior Center and you will be charged $30.00 for monitoring service each month. Please call the Senior Center for more information.

On Wednesday, November 11, Veterans Day, the Senior Center is joining with the American Legion Auxiliary and Arrowhead Economic Opportunity Agency for a Veterans Day lunch at the Senior Center. A roast pork dinner with a red, white and blue dessert is on the menu to be served noon – 1:30 p.m. Lunch is free for veterans and $5.00 for everyone else. Please call (218) 387-2660 by noon on Monday, November 9 for your lunch reservation.

On Monday, November 16, 1:30-4:00 p.m., we will be making beef barley soup and wheat rolls at the Senior Center. We will have fun cooking together and will go home with an inexpensive supper. The only charge is for ingredients, which is $2.00 per pint of soup and two rolls. Call the Senior Center to sign up.

It seems that when people reach the age of fifty, they are concerned about a memoryrelated disease, every time they forget a name or misplace their keys. Thefollowing list provided by the Alzheimer’s Association might help you to determine if you have a reason to worry. In the following list the first symptom in each item is a sign of a typical age-related change and the second item is a sign of a memory-related disease:

»» Making a bad decision once in a while vs. poor judgment and decision-making

»» Missing a monthly payment vs. inability to manage a budget

»» Forgetting which day it is and remembering later vs. losing track of the month or season

»» Sometimes forgetting which word to use vs. difficulty having a conversation

»» Losing things from time to time vs. misplacing things and being unable to retrace steps to find them
