Emergency funding for food shelves

Lake and Cook Counties have been awarded federal funds under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program. The Arrowhead Economic Opportunity Agency (AEOA) has been chosen to receive $8,296.00 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the area.

The award was made by a National Board that is chaired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and consists of representatives from the United Way of America, Salvation Army, American Red Cross, United Jewish Communities, Catholic Charities, U.S.A., and National Council of the Churches of Christ in the US, which will provide the administrative staff and function as fiscal agent. The Board was charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs.

A local board of government officials, churches, non-profit organizations, as well as private businesses and local citizens will determine how the funds awarded will be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service organizations.

The local board meets on a quarterly basis and is responsible for the recommending agencies to receive these funds. Local government, non-profit organizations or private voluntary organizations interested in applying for Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds must contact Valerie Strukel of Arrowhead Economic Opportunity Agency, 702 Third Avenue South, Virginia, MN 55792 or call 1-800-662-5711 ext 234 or (218) 749-2912 ext 234 to receive an application.
