A moose was on the loose in Grand Marais, and even danced the Zumba in Harbor Park! Moose Madness Festival was a hit again this year, and the entire area was busy with moosey undertakings. “Families and friends found us at the info center, and completed numerous activities to earn moose bucks. With these moose bucks, they purchased prizes and fun items. The area merchants and businesses were very generous this year, and we were able to provide many fun items for those ‘moose buck’ purchases,” Information Center Coordinator Anna Klobuchar stated.

The Cook County Community YMCA provided an open house Friday evening, and active families were able to earn moose bucks while moving and grooving. To top it all off, the North House Folk School even hosted a talent show! “Our goal for participants is to unplug and play. Reconnect with one another by doing planned activities, enjoy the outdoors, and even learn a few things about our moose, our treasured mascot,” Klobuchar describes.

Murray the Moose was busy as well, and our “Murrays” this year were Torilyn Hover, Tyler Goldstein, and Billy Hackett.

“The medallion hunt is always popular, and everyone scours the city limits for the ‘gold’ palm-sized ornament. We find that as the day goes on, if it is not found, participants become quite competitive,” Klobuchar added. The winner this year was Parker Kral from Mankato, who received a giant stuffed moose and an Angry Trout gift card.

Also, Dave and Cathi Williams of Bear Track Outfitting hid a wooden medallion on the Bally Creek Trail system, and on Friday afternoon, Alexis White of Manterville, Minnesota, enjoyed a brisk hike and found it. She claimed the painting Fall Ritual by Andrew Kiss, provided by Bear Track Outfitting & Bally Creek Cabins.

The grand prize drawing for a two-night stay at Mangy Moose Motel was held on Sunday, and Sue Richmond of Braham, Minnesota was the lucky winner. Patty Doherty of Grand Marais won the 2nd prize, which is an adorable stuffed moose from Cate & Levi, a company that “upcycles” fabric and knits into handmade, one-of-akind creations.
