Elizabeth Jane Marie Krueger Olson (Betty Olson) age 92 ½ formerly of Grand Marais, passed away on Monday, September 10, 2012, at her home at Southview Senior Living in Inver Grove Heights, MN. Mrs. Olson died from congestive heart failure.
Mrs. Olson was born on March 18, 1920 in Minneapolis, MN to Lillian and Ray Krueger who built the North Shore Hotel in Tofte. Mrs. Olson spent her childhood between Minneapolis and Tofte at the family hotel.
She completed her education at Washburn High School in Minneapolis, graduating in 1938. She was awarded a full academic scholarship to the University of Minnesota where she studied and played bass drum in the University of Minnesota Marching Band.
Mrs. Olson married Gerald L. Olson on April 12, 1947 in Minneapolis.
Mrs. Olson worked for the Commander of the U.S. Navy in San Francisco, CA during World War II and was a wedding and family photographer in Grand Marais. She won numerous awards for her slide and print photography over the years, being an active member of the Twin Cities Camera Club and the Kaposia Camera Club. She was a world traveler and a woman who loved to understand the cultures and people of other countries.
She is predeceased by her husband, Gerald L. Olson; her mother and father, Ray and Lillian Krueger; and her brothers, Rodney Krueger and Steven Krueger.
She is survived by her daughters Susan L. Austad (Ramon Sanchez) of New York City; Terri Michaud (Steve Michaud) of Eagan, MN; her two grandchildren, Alexander Bryce Olson Michaud of Bozeman, MT and Jordyn Elizabeth Michaud of Denver, CO. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and sisters-in law from Grand Marais, Duluth, Minneapolis and Silver Bay.
A celebration of Mrs. Olson’s life will be held on her birthday, March 18, 2013, with burial in the Tofte Cemetery following.
The sun, the moon, the wind, the stars will forever be around, reminding us of the love we shared, and the peace she’s finally found.
