Elizabeth “Betty” Murray, 92, of Grand Marais, formerly of White Bear Lake, died Friday, October 13, 2017 at the Cook County North Shore Hospital.
Betty was born August 23, 1925 to Robert Clarke and Elizabeth (Edgar) Murray in St. Paul, and moved to Wausau where she graduated from high school. She attended Carroll College in Waukesha, and then returned to Minnesota, graduating from the University of Minnesota in 1947 with a degree in social work.
She worked for the Girl Scouts first in St. Paul, later in Wausau as executive director, and then returned to St. Paul to work for the Camp Fire Girls as camp and program director until her retirement. She had made her home in Grand Marais since 1992.
Betty was president of the Minnesota section of the American Camping Association, a past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 200 in White Bear Lake, and a past president of the White Bear Lake Women’s Club. She was active in First Presbyterian Church in White Bear Lake and later First Congregational Church in Grand Marais.
She enjoyed camping, canoeing, craftwork, knitting, crocheting, singing, her dogs, and traveling to Nova Scotia.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; sister Barbara Ruhsam and her husband John; and two nephews, James Ruhsam and Quinn Pederson.
She is survived by a friend, Lois Eyinck of Grand Marais; brother Robert (Carol) Murray of Grand Marais; sister Gail (Gary) Hanson of Two Harbors; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
