CCHS junior guard Sophia Eliasen scored 24 points against the Wrenshall Wrens last Friday night in Wrenhsall to lead the Vikings to a 59-43 non-conference victory.

Along the way, Eliasen broke the 1,000-point mark in a Viking uniform; a feat accomplished only by nine other players from Cook County High School who reached this landmark.

“It’s a tremendous accomplishment for an incredibly talented young woman,” said head coach Kelly Hawsen. “Sophie really took over the game in the second half, shooting well, playing solid D, and making great passes to her teammates.”

Listed at 5’7” (she must have had her height measured when her long blond hair was sticking straight up in the air) the speedy, energetic guard now joins the ranks of Viking greats Malinda Berglund, Maddy Cochrane, Clara Waddell, Rachel Seim, Ashley Deschampe, Essa Jacobsen, Brea Boomer, Emily Jacobsen, and Lily Gruber-Schulz, all who tallied more than 1,000 points while playing on the hardwood court for the Vikings.

Against Wrenshall sophomore forward Abbie Crawford was the second leading Vikings point-getter with 14 points. Paisley Smith finished with 7 points, Emma Gesch netted 6, and Alyssa Spry and Ariana Poyirier each finished with 4 points in the game.

While it was undoubtedly a notable night for Eliasen and her teammates who helped her reach this milestone, coach Hawsen also had some kind words to say about a younger player who is starting to shine for the Vikings.

“Another athlete to watch is Emma Gesch. She has been impressive over the past couple games, really taking to heart the teaching points we focus on during practice and executing those points in games,” Hawsen said.

With the win, the Vikings’ record is now 5-11.

The Vikings will go on the road to play Barnum on February 2 before playing at home on Monday, February 5 at 6:30 p.m. against Chisholm. Come out and cheer for your Vikings!
