Election filing over:

Schroeder short a candidate

The period to file for election for one of the Cook County townships— Lutsen, Tofte or Schroeder—ended on January 11. Each township sought candidates for a three-year term as supervisor and a two-year term as treasurer. Citizens stepped forward for all of the races except one. The Schroeder Township is in need of a candidate for treasurer.

Schroeder has a candidate for supervisor. Incumbent Supervisor Roger “Bill” McKeever filed to run for re-election. McKeever was elected as a write-in candidate in 1999, but before that he was instrumental in forming the Schroeder Township. When he ran for re-election in 2002, McKeever said, “I guess there’s only a period of five years or so when I wasn’t on the town board.”

McKeever serves with Supervisors Ross Willson and Tina McKeever and Clerk Carol Tveekrem.

Incumbent Treasurer Mary Van Doren did not file for re-election, so as of March 8, 2011, the township could be absent a treasurer. If a Schroeder resident is interested in serving as township treasurer but missed the filing period, they may still run as a write-in candidate. They should contact Schroeder Clerk Carol Tveekrem at (218)663-8109 to let the town board know of their interest. If no one is elected to the treasurer seat, the town board may appoint a citizen to fill the vacancy.

A choice for Lutsen

Incumbent Treasurer John Groth, who has served as treasurer for seven years, filed for re-election and no one filed against him. However, incumbent Supervisor Marland Hansen will face a challenger on the ballot. Lela Goettl has filed to run for the Lutsen supervisor seat.

The other people on the town board are Supervisors Joe Buttweiler and Diane Parker and Clerk Amity Goettl.

Status quo for Tofte

In Tofte both incumbents filed to run for re-election. Supervisor Allan “DC” Olsen and Treasurer Mary Jane Huggins both filed as candidates during the election filing period. No one else filed to oppose them.

Also serving on the Tofte town board are Supervisors Paul James and Jim King and Clerk Barb Gervais.

Township elections and annual meetings are held on the second Tuesday of March each year, so the 2011 election will be Tuesday, March 8.
