Education builds many types of strength

In my few years living in Grand Marais I have found several ways to get involved – board member, musician, coach, and now mayor. As I write this I notice that many of these have revolved around the school as a community resource.

There are several issues that face our community on a policy level that many, many people smarter than I have beaten their heads against the wall trying to solve. I admit my own frustrations with the many faceted challenges we face. There is one thing that comes up every time we have one of those conversations though: education and the school.

Sure, the local governments can create policies to address health and wellness, safety of our children, and economic development, but I can almost guarantee you that those policies will be less effective and more expensive than properly funding our school.

The teachers and other employees of the school do so much for our children’s social, emotional, academic, and physical strength that I dare say the experience these kids have in school ripples through our community for generations.

Our community has been very careful in planning out what we want to look like in the future, let’s let that vision include a fully funded school where students get access to the resources they need to be successful.

Please vote yes on November 8th.
