After reading News-Herald articles for the past few weeks about the proposed 1% Local Option Sales Tax referendum, I was left with many questions about the option and the proposed projects it would be used for. I was able to attend the public presentation last Monday night where I spent three hours along with 70 other community members learning about the tax option and details about the seven project proposals.
I came away with an understanding of the complexity of the referendum but also with knowledge of the immense possible benefits the extra tax dollars would have in many varied sectors of the community. Whether you’re a library patron, a tourism business owner, a swimmer or other sports enthusiast, or an Internet/TV/telephone/ electricity user, the 1% tax would bring needed improvements and changes to Cook County.
I urge citizens who plan to vote in November to take note of this referendum and take time to become educated on it.
I also hope the News Herald will report with clarity and thoroughness on this issue to help us all make the best, most informed decision.
