Shame on you, News-Herald. I thought this was a Cook County community newspaper and your allowance and placement of Mr. Gamble’s rambles raises serious doubt after last week’s paper allowance of almost an entire op-ed page. Hopefully this was a slip in judgment or an unfortunate need of space filler. It wouldn’t be so bad if it was humorous or insightful but to spread his political palaver, which is his right, but you offered no counter view point to consider. This is a community newspaper isn’t it? Let Mr. Gamble ramble on his own dime or contain himself with a column or two.
He cites Ms. Kersten who is a frequent spokesperson for the Center of the American Experiment, a “think” tank wandering far to the right of center and exclusively fostering that viewpoint.
Mr. Gamble’s repeated references to Frederich Hayek were tiresome. The latter leans far to the right in his writings on economics and social policy. He surprisingly, once back in 1973, proposed an “assured minimum income” for all Americans; that surprise you Mr. Gamble? Milton Friedman, University of Chicago economist, would be my choice of a thoughtful and brilliant economist, who incidentally had his differences with Mr. Hayek, as did many others.
Philosophies and ideas on economics are widespread and varied; there was no hint of this in our community newspaper, which was sad to see and prompted this letter. Balance should be the watchword of our community newspaper; you tipped off that balance in this instance. One other note: some of our grandchildren attend or have graduated from Edina schools and are balanced bright kids with the benefits of an excellent education and no perceptible harm.
