In last week’s paper, Jerry Hiniker took issue with my “Luddite views of modern technology.” Sorry Jerry, but I couldn’t find “luddite” in either my Webster’s or Funk & Wagnall’s dictionaries…even spell check refused to recognize it. Perhaps with broadband access to Wikipedia I might have had better luck.
I can only assume that “Luddite” is a derogatory Biblical term referring to a person who could not support the government funding of papyrus as a viable technology for the advancement of ancient communication. Should that be the case…I am indeed… ludditical?
Hiniker rants on in his letter that if “all great leaps of technology and science” had not been funded with government tax dollars “we would likely still be in the Stone Age.” Apparently Jerry has acquired evidence, likely through some web chat room, that an early Cave Council had funded both the quest for fire and research leading to the invention of the wheel.
Should our government continue to lay the cost of its rampant spending in our Land of Never Enough on the future generations it can’t seem to find the funds to educate, Mr. Hiniker will likely come to consider the “Stone Age” as the good old days.
You can “proudly” keep throwing your tax dollars overboard Jerry, but the USS Spend-it-All continues to sink in debt faster than you can bail.
