Economic Freedom

If someone were to ask you where does the U.S. rank in terms of economic freedom what would you guess? Americans pride themselves on our liberty and the American Dream. Do we rank first? Do we rank in the top three? No, the United States ranks ninth in economic freedom according to the Wall Street Journal.

The Heritage Foundation describes economic freedom as “the fundamental right of every human to control his or her own labor and property. In an economically free society, individuals are free to work, produce, consume, and invest in any way they please, with that freedom both protected by the state and unconstrained by the state. In economically free societies, governments allow labor, capital and goods to move freely, and refrain from coercion or constraint of liberty beyond the extent necessary to protect and maintain liberty itself.”

Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia take the top three respectively. Even Ireland and Canada beat out the U.S. How can Canada have more economic freedom than the U.S.? We need to get our house in order!

Minnesota’s 8th District elected Chip Cravaack because he is committed to reducing the size, spending and regulatory intrusiveness of the federal government, and not a moment too soon!

Two quotes to consider:

There are more instances of the
abridgment of the freedom of
the people by gradual and silent
encroachments of those in power
than by violent and sudden
usurpations.

James Madison

The people of every country are the
only safeguards of their own rights,
and are the only instruments which
can be used for their destruction.
And certainly they would never
consent to be so used were they not
deceived.

Thomas Jefferson
