Earth Day harbor clean up plans being set

Once again, the Grand Marais harbor will be the site of a clean-up effort on Earth Day.

Organizer Jim Shinners said he hopes to accomplish three goals: Recognize and honor Earth Day, and all that it represents; clean up the Grand Marais harbor area; and demonstrate that various organizations and entities can come together cooperatively to achieve a worthwhile goal.

The theme for Earth Day this year will be “What are you doing for Earth Day?” Information will be sent to the local schools, churches and other groups regarding activities they may be interested in.

Shinners said he has divided the harbor area into segments from Artist Point to the west lighthouse. “I will encourage organizations or groups to adopt a segment to clean up, and I will also have some segments for individuals to work in.

As an example of Earth Day activities, some schools nationwide are attempting to establish ‘no idle zones’ near school property. “Some people are planting trees, while others are participating in cleanups such as ours,” Shinners said.

On Thursday, April 22, participating groups and individuals will be asked to check in at Harbor Inn any time between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. Coffee, cookies and garbage bags will be provided. Bags can be left out on sidewalks or areas near roads.

Shinners is the contact person and may be reached at 387-1191.
