Taking part in the Earth Day cleanup at Artists’ Point in Grand Marais were community members from many walks of life, including the US Border Patrol, the US Forest Service, local businesses and this group of children from the North Shore Children’s House preschool. Over 75 people turned out to participate in cleanup on the Grand Marais waterfront on Thursday, April 22, the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. Church groups, Girl Scouts, the Grand Marais Chamber of Commerce, North House Folk School, the US Forest Service, members of Harbor Friends and the Grand Marais Business Council lent a hand.
Organizer Jim Shinners expressed appreciation to local media representatives— Debbie Benedict of WTIP radio and Hal Kettunen of the CookCounty News-Herald— for helping spread the word of the cleanup.
Shinners added a special thanks to the US Border Patrol, the City of Grand Marais and Dave Tersteeg of the Grand Marais Parks Department for their extra help in disposal of the trash. Shinners said, “Congratulations and thanks to all of you for your superb support of the 40th annual Earth Day.”
