Early wolf hunt closed in Northeast Zone

Minnesota Department of Natural Resources officials closed the early wolf hunt season for the Northeast (N.E.) Zone on November 13 after 35 wolves had been taken.

The early season quota for the N.E. zone, which includes Cook County, was 37. When close, the DNR will cancel a hunting season rather than see the quota overextended.

Meanwhile hunting remains open in the Northwest Zone where a target was set at 83 wolves. As of Friday, November 14 hunters had registered 47 wolves.

The early hunting season will end at the conclusion of the deer hunting rifle season, November 23.

A late wolf hunting and trapping season will be held from November 29 to January 31 in all zones unless quotas are reached in those zones.

The DNR set a harvest of 250 wolves for the 2014-2015 season which is 30 more than last year but down from 400 during the state’s first wolf hunt two years ago.
