Early spring affects winter tourism statistics

Cook County lodging tax income reported so far for the first quarter of 2010 seems to reflect the lack of snow over the winter and the early spring, with the tax bringing in a county average of 2.2% less than the first quarter of 2009. That’s not such a good thing, since January through March of last year brought 17.4% less lodging tax income than the year before.

The Lutsen-Tofte Tourism Association first-quarter lodging tax income was down 2.5% from the same quarter last year. The Grand Marais Area Tourism Association’s income was down 5.9%. TheGunflint Tourism Association’s statistic was the ray of sunshine, with an increase of 4.3%.

Last year’s total countywide lodging tax income was down 8.4% from the previous year.

Forty-one establishments in the West End, 28 establishments on the Gunflint Trail, and 39 establishments in the Grand Marais area collect the lodging tax.

Cook County fared a little better than Ely the first quarter of 2010. Ely’s lodging tax income was down 13.7% over the same quarter last year. Its total 2009 lodging tax income was down 4.4% over the previous year.
