A call came in to Cook County Law Enforcement at 8:55 a.m. Sept. 30 from Edwin E. Thoreson, Inc. at 31 Thoreson Drive in Grand Marais, reporting a dump truck on fire. The Grand Marais Fire Department, Cook County Ambulance and Grand Marais First Responders were paged. The fire department arrived on scene by 9:02 a.m. to find the 1992 International dump truck fully engulfed.

As Grand Marais firefighters attacked the blaze, the Maple Hill Fire Department was called for mutual aid, but cancelled when it appeared that the Grand Marais Department had the fire under control. Foam was sprayed on the smoldering truck to make sure it did not reignite.

All responders were clear of the scene by 9:56 a.m.

The fire was spotted by business owner Randi Thoreson who was loading recycling materials into her car. She looked over toward the fuel pumps and garage and saw a massive black cloud of smoke.

Thoreson said thankfully, the truck was one of the older models in the company’s fleet. One newer truck was nearby and Roger Hanson quickly moved it to safety.

The cause of the fire is not known, but it is believed to have been caused by an electrical problem.
