Duluth East wins North Shore Challenge cross country race

On a warm September 1 day, sections of the hilly Pincushion Trails were filled with high school runners coming from across the region to take part in the North Shore Challenge Cross Country race. Duluth East, with about 120 boys and girls on the team, won both the boys and girls titles.

Duluth East senior Oliver Maitake won the boys 5K race with a time of 17:16.3. In second was Alex Burkhardt of South Ridge and Ian Thorpe, North Shore, was third. Ian crossed the line in 17:58.4.

Other North Shore finishers were Cyrus Meyers, 21st in 20:07; Keean Selin, 22nd, 20:07.4; Nicholas Swartz, 45th in 22:09.7; Brayden Schmidt, 46th in 22:10.2; Everett Hurth, 47th in 22:11.4; and Elijah Smith 51st in 22:56.8 to round out the team’s top seven. Andrew Hallberg finished 58th in 24:26.9; Haddon Taylor was 62nd in 24:57.2, and Edwin Erickson placed 64th in 25:11.6.

When the top five placers for each school were added up, Duluth East had 29 points. Moose Lake-Willow River scored 73, South Ridge 101, Proctor 108, North Shore 109, Carlton/Wrenshall 145, and Mesabi East 148.

Lamar Gordon

Girls’ varsity

Proctor’s Lizzy Harnell, a sophomore, won the girl’s 5K with a time of 21:15.6. Lamar Gordon led North Shore with a 5th place finish and time of 21:59.6. Placing 8th was Olya Wright in 22:10.4; Jocelyn Carr placed 21st in 24:01.4; Sierra Geatz finished 22nd in 24:05.2; Quincy Hurth placed 34th in 25:10; Valerie Hurth crossed the line in 36th place with a time of 25e:28.2; Brianna Monson was 39th in 26:35.7, and Genevieve Silence placed 45th in 27:48.4.

Duluth East girls tallied 24 points to take the team honors. Proctor and North Shore tied at 81, South Ridge 101, Carlton/Wrenshall 105 and Moose Lake/Willow River/Barnum finished with 124 points.

Jr. High Girls 4K race

Duluth East ran away with the girls’ Junior Varsity 4K team title. Only Danica Wyman from Moose Lake/WR/ Barnum snuck into third place out of the top 13 finishers who were all wearing red Greyhound uniforms. Lydia Eaton placed first in 18:28.8.

Claire Lindstrom led North Shore with 14th place. Claire finished the course in 20:57.1. Signe Myers placed 26th in 22:30.8; Emma Crook finished 30th in 23:24.9; Zoe Kacures was 32nd in 24:56.7; Elizabeth Radke placed 35th in 31:19.3, and Shawanda Everson was 36th in 31:22.2.

Jr. High boys 4K race

The first 11 finishers across the line were wearing Duluth East uniforms and East’s 15th runner placed 16th in this race. North Shore was led by Rylan Brown, who was 17th in 18:36.7. Isaac Schmidt finished 18th in 18:42.2; Taylor Finn placed 19th in 18:43.3; Odin Hansen took 23rd in 19:17.7, and Alex Stone placed 24th in 19:18.6.

Girls Jr. High 2.6K race

Proctor’s 8th grader Rachel Bettendorf placed first in the 2.6K race with a time of 11:11.7. Ryleigh Thorpe placed 7th with a time of 12:42.9 to lead North Shore. Grace Swartz fished 8th in 12:59.7; Amelia Saamanen took 14th in 14:01.6; Elizabeth Swartz placed 16th in 14:06.3; Sophia Lindstrom placed 19th in 14:29; Anni Dix was 22nd in 14:38.6; Hiver Moody finished 24th in 14:39.7; Hazel Lichty finished 34th in 17:21.6 and Leah Belmore placed 35th in 18:01.

Boys Jr. High

Placing first and second for North Shore was Adam Oberg crossing the finish line in 10:09, and Georgi Dimitrov, placing second in 10:21.2. Grant Ober placed 6th in 10:52; Chance Jacobsen was 13th in 11:12.5; General Higgins placed 17th in 11:20.2; Talon DeBoer finished 22nd in 11:57.3; Elias Pszwaro placed 25th in 12:06.6; Sidney Litterst finished 26th in 12:22.5; Erik Gischia finished 27th in12:27.1; Ero Moody placed 28th in 12:28.3, and Dylan Brien placed 31st in 12:43.
