Duluth Children’s Museum launches Museum on the Move

The Duluth Children’s Museum announces the launch of a newly developed program: Museum on the Move, Exhibit
Explorations.
The first in a series of Museum Centers is being piloted at Lakewood Elementary School in Duluth.

Faced with space constraints within the Depot while fundraising to relocate and expand the Duluth Children’s Museum to Clyde Park in Duluth, the museum staff was challenged by how to extend the reach of the museum. With membership exceeding 6,200 individuals today it was clear a new strategy had to be identified. “We combined the strengths we had; our commitment to program delivery tied to academic standards, our long term relationship with the schools, and the collection of the museum to look at how we could develop a program that would address community needs, not just our institutional needs” says Rich Jaworski, vice president. “Once we were able to locate and furnish a fabrication studio in Superior, Wisconsin, we were able to move this concept forward. I am excited about this first venture and look forward to the development of the next two Exhibit Explorations
which will become available to schools during the next school year.”

Key to making this possible was the support of governmental agencies. The Duluth Children’s Museum received a $381,000 congressional directed grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, working in close partnership with Congressman Oberstar. Combining federal funds with state funds awarded from the constitutional amendment for the Arts and Cultural Legacy Fund created by the Minnesota voters has provided for a base of support to explore new options.

The public is encouraged to visit the new Duluth Children’s Museum Lakewood School Museum Center.
