Duane Johnson, age 89, died August 22, 2020, in Duluth, Minnesota, after suffering a stroke.
Clarence Duane Johnson, son of Clarence and Ida (Sundquist) Johnson, was born June 16, 1931, in Duluth, Minnesota. He lived on the shores of Lake Superior in Hovland his entire life. He always enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing! His main occupation was logging. While most loggers became increasingly mechanized over the years, Duane continued cutting with a chainsaw and hauling trees to his landing with a skidder. He worked harder on a daily basis than most men a third of his age. He logged until the age of 86. Duane also did carpentry, building his own home next to Lake Superior, along with several other cabins in the Hovland area. He helped his children in the construction of their homes.
Duane married his high school sweetheart, Virginia Schuppel, February 14, 1952, in Hovland. They celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary this year.
Surviving Duane are his wife and their six children – Sandy (Fritz), Rocky, Dusty (Eric), Stoney, Rusty (Kathi) and Misty (Mike); eleven grandchildren – Mikala, Jory, Gianna, Clay, Skyler, Colee, Brandon, Nicole, Desiree, Tasha and Kayla; ten great-grandchildren and one sister, Arline Johnson (Keck).
Family members are having a celebration of his life in the near future.
Memorials preferred to Trinity Lutheran Church, Hovland, of which Duane has been a lifelong member.
