Drowsy driver in rollover on Gunflint Trail

Cook County Law Enforcement received a call from a Gunflint Trail motorist reporting a rollover accident “south of Bearskin Lodge” at about 2:30 p.m. on August 11, 2014. The caller said they had to drive to get cell phone signal to make the emergency call. Emergency responders found the vehicle off the road at the S curve near Swamper Lake.

According to the Cook County Sheriff ’s Office report, Don Miller, 72, Mineral Point, Wisconsin, was driving southeast in a 2013 white Subaru Outlook when the crash occurred. Miller told sheriff deputies that he was feeling drowsy and went off the road. The passenger, William King, 43, from Waukesha, Wisconsin was sleeping at the time of the accident.

A witness in the vehicle directly behind Miller stated that the vehicle “slowly went off the road and flipped.” The law enforcement report said the car went off the roadway to the right and the overturned vehicle came to a rest on its roof about 200 feet from the road.

The Gunflint Fire Department, Gunflint Ambulance, two sheriff deputies, and a Minnesota State Trooper responded. The first emergency responders were on scene at 2:41 p.m. They were all clear of the scene by 3:21 p.m.

The Wisconsin men were transported to Cook County North Shore Hospital where they were treated and released.
