A few days ago I came upon a severely injured deer writhing on the highway. Whoever hit it kept going and did not call it in. I stopped, called the sheriff, and stayed with the deer until a deputy arrived to put it out of its agony. It is appalling and unconscionable that someone would leave an animal to suffer in this way.
When we encounter pain and distress in any living being, it is incumbent upon us to respond with compassion, concern, and mercy.
