A call was made to Cook County Law Enforcement at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 12, reporting a car in the ditch on the left side of Ball Club Road in Grand Marais. The caller reported that the vehicle was on a steep embankment. The driver, John Haukos, 45, Duluth, was not injured when his Ford Explorer left the roadway.
Haukos was cited for careless driving, possession of a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia and no insurance.
Cook County Towing got the car out of its precarious position in the ditch.
Another accident occurred later the same day. Cook County Law Enforcement received a call that a vehicle was in the ditch about three miles south of Gunflint Lodge. The caller said the car appeared to be almost folded in half. However, the driver, Caleb Belter, 22, Somerset, Wisc. was not injured. Belter told Cook County Sheriff Deputies that he had fallen asleep at the wheel.
He was given a ride to Tuscarora Lodge. No charges were filed in that incident.
