Dayna Gallagher of Hovland humbly insists that she “just got lucky” on the second day of hunting season 2010, when she got a oncein a-lifetime buck. “I was just in the right place at the right time.”

Asked where that “place” was, Gallagher just smiled and said, “On the shore.”

Gallagher said she plans to use a European mount for the impressive antlers—a 22 ½-inches wide with 20 points.

Gallagher did not have the buck weighed but estimates that it was around 200 pounds. She said for as large as the horns were, the buck was “pretty skinny.” The buck had very little body fat and Gallagher said it was doubtful that it would not have survived the winter.

Instead he will be remembered by Gallagher as the “dragon buck” because the atypical rack looks a bit like that of a dragon, with three sets of brow tines.

A once-in-a-lifetime buck indeed.
