Cook County’s own Andy Cochrane finished sixth in the individual round of the regional MATHCOUNTS competition in Duluth this month. Cochrane achieved this in a field of 72 students and moved up through three rounds of the Count Down tournament to finish third. The competition took place Feb. 15 at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. The team of “mathletes” from Cook County Middle School was comprised of Cochrane, his sister Maddy, Laramie Carlson and Alex Hegg, all in grade 7.
Arrowhead Electric Cooperative in Lutsen was awarded a loan guarantee for $5,024 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Utilities Service. The loan will be used to finance the construction of 99 miles of new distribution lines and make other system improvements. This will enable the cooperative to serve 400 new consumers.

Jim Ringquist of Grand Marais was a winner in the “Fifty Years of Jeep” commemorative poster contest. Celebrating 50 years as an American institution, Jeep asked professional artists, designers and illustrators to participate in a contest to produce a full-color poster evoking the spirit of Jeep.
The Chicago Bay school is getting a facelift. The inside is being completely renovated into a singlefamily dwelling unit. The outside of the historic landmark will remain basically the same with the exception of the windows on the east side. While taking out the old windows, Archie Kirk found a board with Aug. 17, 1925 inscribed on it. Another find was a 12-inch wooden ruler with the initials “C.E.” carved in it. Anyone remember doing this?
One does not have to go to Hawaii to acquire a tan. Here in this north country the reflection of the sun on our unsullied snow can sneak up and bequeath one with a “hurtin’” sunburn or, if caution is not used, even snow blindness. A local couple out with their dogs on a hiking and fishing trip to Meditation Lake acquired sunburns each day. Now, they even glow in the dark!

Many women in Croftville and Grand Marais had unexpected invitations early Saturday morning for a come-as-you-are coffee party at the Gene Malner home in Croftville.
Basketball fans will be happy to learn that a game has been arranged between the Cobblestone team and the Canadian All-Stars. Basketball in Canada has increased tremendously in popularity the past few years, and the brand of basketball played has improved a great deal. This game is expected to be a good one.
In trying to avoid deer on a slippery road at Tofte last week, Harry Sloan Sr. had the misfortune of tipping his truck over in the ditch. It was his first major accident in over 30 years of driving. He was taken to the hospital, but escaped serious injury.
Thirty-nine Wisconsin people joined the Great Circle Tour last week, and enthusiastically embraced the idea. They were guests of the Grand Marais State Bank at noon lunch at the East Bay. Various heads of local organizations were also present to swell the group to 52. The four-day tour took these folks around Lake Superior with convenient stops for get-acquainted sessions en route.

In a shack on the barren lands 200 miles north of the nearest Hudson’s Bay trading post A.O. Rinehart, formerly a Cook County trapper and homesteader, fought a solitary and tragic battle against scurvy, thirst and cold, and died after he had become too weak to crawl to his water supply and stove. He came to the North Country for the first time in 1919 and went into prospecting and trapping, but left after reaching the outposts of civilization.
Sunday morning residents of Chicago Bay notified the local customs officer that two large gasoline boats could be seen passing there. They were considerable distance from shore and headed in a southwesterly direction.
Herbert Driver of the Soo is visiting friends in the village this week. He was mate of the U.S.S. Cook which was stationed in Grand Marais last summer. He now has an honorable discharge after five years in the service, and it is rumored that he is about to embark on the sea of matrimony.
There wasn’t any school Tuesday as it was George Washington’s birthday.
