The news couldn’t come at a worse time for the financially strapped school district, but at the Jan. 31 meeting of the Grand Marais Public Utilities Commission, Water Superintendent Walt Annerer informed the board that the water meters in the school building are not calibrated correctly. Annerer said he was investigating ways to improve water loss figures when he discovered the discrepancy in the water use at the school versus what was being billed, and the difference is very likely quite large. In fact the difference could be as high as $80,000.

Cook County High School’s drama club finished in first place at subsections in Esko on Jan. 27, with their performance of The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds, a one-act play. The cast of five, all girls, gave an outstanding display of acting. Jenna Latz was named most valuable actress.

Due to a shortage of logs, Hedstrom Lumber Company will be reducing sawmill operation to 30 hours per week. Some employees will be reassigned to planning, chipping and remanufacturing operations, which will be increasing production. No layoffs are expected.

Where do visitors to the North Shore come from? Recently, Grand Portage National Monument conducted a study to determine just that. Eric Nicolaison, a Cook County High School volunteer, reviewed the monument’s guest register from the Great Hall to get an idea of the variety of people who visit. Visitors last year came from 42 foreign countries, with the majority coming from the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Finland, Japan, Australia and Italy. In addition, all five Canadian provinces were represented. Grand Portage also had visitors from all 50 states.

Harry Matthews, U.S. Forest Service head here, drove to Michigan last Friday, taking with him three live fisher that had been trapped here by game wardens. The fisher will be released in the Ottawa National Forest in an attempt to rid the forest of porcupines that were damaging the tree plantations there. The fisher are said to attack the porcupines from below after they have treed them. They will devour the entire animal. The fisher have increased in this area and the porcupine have all but disappeared.

A survey has been completed by state game wardens to determine the causes of moose mortality and the extent of moose disease in the herd during 1960, the Department of Conservation reported. Of the 77 cases of moose mortality reported by wardens, 25 were shot by hunters, 19 during the deer season. Collisions with cars or trains accounted for 10 more and 20 were found to have died from disease. In addition, 32 more were found to be suffering from some disease at the time of the survey.

Mark Palmer’s 11th birthday anniversary was celebrated with a group of school friends last Sunday. After dinner at the Don Palmer home, all enjoyed a Bing Crosby movie at the Shore Theatre.

90 Years Ago · Feb. 3, 1921

An informal meeting was held Sunday by a number of businessmen of Grand Marais and adjoining communities, for the purpose of calling a mass meeting to organize a cooperative telephone company for Cook County. As we understand it, this is to be an enlargement of the Tofte company.

Frithjof Wannebo lost a valuable horse last Thursday, from colic.

Faith Blackwell celebrated the 11th anniversary of her birth last night at a progressive peanut and gum sculpture party. After a very interesting time, lasting from 5 till 8 p.m., she took her guests to the Princess Theater, her mother and Mrs. G.W. Robertson escorting the juvenile brigade thither.

The county board held its regular monthly meeting Tuesday. There was the regular amount of routine business.
