• Cook County officials will soon install a weather transmitter in the Gunflint District to alert residents and campers of bad weather.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration transmitter will provide early storm warning to people who own the $40 radios. The radios turn on automatically when a storm warning is issued.

• Thelodging tax figures for the first seven months of the year reflect a robust year for the lodging industry. Although the July totals were incomplete in all three districts, comparisons with the first seven months of 1999 show respectable growth in the Grand Marais, Gunflint Trail and Lutsen-Tofte- Schroeder districts.

• Voters in Grand Marais will face a real challenge in November. While only three positions — mayor and two council seats — are under contention, nine citizens have applied to appear on the ballot.

Sept. 17, 1990

• TheCook County Board expressed no interest in purchasing a 1.2-acre tract along the Flute Reed River in Hovland.

Thecounty had been contacted by the land’s owner to see if it was interested in purchasing the tract for $25,000. The property is along the east bank of the river from County Road 76 and Lake Superior.

TheMinnesota DNR had been trying to obtain a fisherman’s easement along both sides of the river for a price of $8 per foot. In response, the owner said he was unwilling to grant the easement, but offered to sell the property.

• Cook County will act as the sponsoring government unit for a state Department of Trade and Economic Development grant for $67,500 that will be part of the financial package for the Lamplighter Super 8 Motel expansion in Grand Marais.

The project will include renovation of the existing 17 units and the addition of 18 new rooms. Amenities will include a whirlpool, sauna, sundeck, guest laundry, enlarged lobby, landscaping and a larger parking lot.

Sept. 15, 1960

• Thepre-election prediction of thin turn-out of voters throughout the state for the 1960 Primary showed itself in the results for Cook County. A total of 843 ballots were cast in the county in comparison to a total of 1,341 in the 1958 Primary.

• TheAAA publication has recently devoted four pages to the beauty of the new road on the Gunflint Trail, and the North Shore Drive, urging people to take a fall trip and enjoy the late coloring found along the Shore the last of September and early October.

Detroit newspapers continue to extol the loveliness of this trip.

• A single 40-year-old Grand Portage man was fatally injured in an automobile accident on the Good Harbor Hill Road three miles west of Grand Marais Monday night.

Theman was returning to the camp where he worked when he lost control of the car and went into the woods. He was taken to the hospital, but pronounced dead on arrival.

Sept. 15, 1920

• TheLake Shore Telephone Company is improving its line along the shore. They expect to have a metallic line all the way from Two Harbors to Grand Marais and will have a separate wire for long distance business.

• Chris Nelson has purchased a Delco lighting plant and is having it installed on his farm on Maple Hill.

• Sam Zimmerman Jr. left Wednesday morning for various points in North Dakota, where Mrs. Zimmerman and children are visiting relatives. Sam is making the trip in his automobile and expects his family to accompany him on the return trip.

• TheNorth Shore Garage has received its first order of Nobby Tread tires this week.
