MARCH 18, 2002

v Cook County’s West End townships met last Tuesday and voted to approve a two-year $30,000 property levy that will be used to help pay for the operation of the Birch Grove Community Center located in Schroeder. When the night was over residents in Lutsen, Tofte and Schroeder each agreed to levy $10,000 per township. There were 40 yes votes and six no votes in Schroeder; 17 yes votes and eight no votes in Lutsen; and 100 percent yes votes in Tofte. To have the plan work, all three townships needed to pass the levy. v About half a dozen DNR staff came to the March 11 county board of commissioners meeting and gave an overview of the plans under way in the state forests. There was some gloomy news. Unfortunately, they said, there is a $3 million projected shortfall in the annual revenue for the Minnesota state parks. Thus, all managers are anticipating a 5 to 10 percent reduction of expenses this summer. This will mean a $6,000 reduction at Cascade alone and translate into fewer office hours and a shorter season.

MARCH 16, 1992

v The Forest Service has made a decision to grant an easement to Cook County to reconstruct the Gunflint Trail from the Trout Lake/Kimball Lake Road to the Greenwood Lake Road. The project will cover close to five miles and the county proposes to do the work in two segments. v A plan to advertise for bids for the construction of the new Cook County Community Center was authorized by the board of commissioners. The highway department will act as general contractor for the project, which will be done by bidding out the work and volunteer labor. It is estimated that half the work will be done by volunteers.

MARCH 17, 1977

v FROM JUSTINE KERFOOT’S ON THE GUNFLINT TRAIL

Saganaga Lake the blue ice is showing through and trail travel remains good except for about 50 feet of slush the winter portage. The Grand Marais Snowmobile Club planned to spend this last weekend on a trek to Billy Powell’s resort. v Gladys Milam of Clearwater has heard the wolves howling almost every night. They have apparently been close for she can hear them when she is inside the Boostrom home, which is a well built and insulated house.

MARCH 15, 1962

v Another landmark, the old Village Hall, will soon be demolished to make room for a new village library to be built at the site this summer. The village books and furniture have been moved to the Arrowhead Hotel, using the space formerly occupied by Gust Berglund’s Paint Shop. This will be a temporary location of the library until early fall when it is hoped the new building will be ready for use. v The Cook County High School band, under the direction of Harold Ikola, left yesterday for Fort William and Port Arthur, Ontario, where they took part in the annual Northern Ontario Music competition for the fourth year. So far, the band has won two firsts out of the three contests entered. Last year they took second.

MARCH 21, 1957

v DOCTORS MAKE A HOUSE CALL ACROSS GUNFLINT LAKE Dr. Richard Soderberg visited Mrs. Mary Cook at her home on Gunflint Lake. Mrs. Cook is about 100 years old and she needed a medical check-up. Dr. Soderberg, Dr. Robert Sande, and Merv Bower trekked across Gunflint Lake to reach Mary Cook’s home. v WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM YOUR TEENAGER? This question will be the center of a discussion conducted by Charles Martin, extension family life education specialist. A teenager may be physically mature but immature in his emotions and actions. Adolescent emotions are always intense. Martin advises: Live in the present and develop an appreciation for the world in which your teenager must grow and adjust. v 1957 SPELLING CHAMPION Sherrie Engel, eighth grade daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Engel, is the 1957 Spelling Champion of Cook County.

MARCH 16, 1922

v The Grand Marais village fire engine was tried out last week and found to be in first-class working condition. v Charles J. Anderson of Maple Hill is suffering from a bad cut on his face which he received while digging a well. v The county trucks left here Tuesday morning to open up the roads east as far as Hovland.
