With fire conditions rated at “high to extreme” across the Northland, all campfires will be banned in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness until further notice. Until the area gets some rain, campers in the BWCAW and some parts of the Superior National Forest will be restricted to using gas and propane camp stoves to cook their meals.

The realigned Gunflint Trail will be a true North Shore project. County Engineer Chuck Schmit told the county commissioners last week that the bituminous to top off the curvaceous new road comes all the way from Lake County. “We almost lost it,” Schmit said, explaining that a Lake County edict against exporting gravel had to be overcome. “But they like us, so it’s okay,” the engineer said.

KITCHEN TALK by Mary Jane Hedstrom

This week I went to the kitchen of Amy Nelson. Amy brought out an armload of handwork she had made during the past winter. She had knitted quilts and sewed quilts of wool patchwork plus embroidered, knitted, and cross-stitched pillows. There were dresser scarves and pillowcases for her granddaughters’ hope chests. Each year, Amy has a host of entries for the fall County Fair. She uses her prize money to purchase supplies for the next year’s projects and gifts. Amy says,”My hands are always busy, and my mind is always busy with things I can do or will do.” Amy is an expert cook, as well as a seamstress, painter, and poet. Her four children include Joyce Krueger of Tofte. Here is Amy’s famous fish cake recipe:

FISH CAKES
5 pounds herring fillets, ground two times
3/4 teaspoon pepper
2 1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon mace
1 can evaporated milk
4 eggs

Mix all ingredients until well blended and light in texture. Shape into flat cakes and fry until brown on both sides.

PLANS LAID FOR VILLAGE SMITHY

Co-sponsors of a plan to restore the Bally Blacksmith Shop include Albert Bally and the Cook County Historical Society. The plan is to restore and renovate the old blacksmith shop as is possible. It would contain original blacksmith equipment. The restored shop would be open to tourists as an extension of the Historical Society Museum. The blacksmith business was opened by Samuel Bally. It was passed to his sons, Albert and William Bally. When William passed away, Albert’s son, William, became the third generation to carry the business.

Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Setterstrom and four children of Superior drove to Grand Marais Saturday. Mr. Setterstrom came to inspect the electrical work of the Grand Marais Light and Power Co. They found everything in perfect order and the poles which were set in the winter are all solid.
