• Three well-known residents of the county have filed for the District 4 commissioner’s seat held by Wes Hedstrom. Hedstrom, of Maple Hill, did not file for re-election this year.

The filers are Dale Bockovich, Gene Erickson and Carol Gresczyk.

Walt Mianowski, county board chairman, is the only candidate in District 2.

• A minor interruption of phone service in the Colvill area occurred on July 17 and 18. A spokesman for Qwest said about 75 homes lost their service when the line was accidentally severed on County Road 14.

Fortunately, the lack of phone service, even for over 12 hours, did not create a hardship. When the sheriff was contacted about the outage on July 18, the dispatcher said no one had heard about it.

July 23, 1990

• Three young Twin Cities men were killed last Saturday, July 14, when the Piper Cherokee they were piloting plunged into a wooded ridge north of County Road 45 and west of the Cascade River.

Thecrash occurred as the trio were en route from Silver Bay to Devil Track Airport. When they failed to arrive, a Coast Guard helicopter was dispatched from Michigan to conduct a search.

From the wreckage, the plane appeared to be heading southeast when it hit two large tree limbs, flipped over and crashed upside down. There was speculation that the plane had run out of fuel, since the men had reportedly tried to purchase fuel at Silver Bay but were unable to do so.

• No one was seriously injured in a threecar rear end collision at the Cross River bridge in Schroeder July 16.

• About two dozen Rainbows remained at Barker Lake last week, putting finishing touches on cleaning up the site. Garbage was stacked in big piles along the road. Recyclables were separated for pick-up. Other trash was awaiting a compactor. By late last week nearly all the garbage had been removed from the site.

July 21, 1960

• TheNorth Shore received a tremendous publicity nudge from the Minneapolis
Tribune
last Sunday in the form of a number of colored pictures and an article entitled “A motorist’s view of North Shore drive.”

• A worker was injured in a fall on a barge at Taconite Harbor last Thursday. He is recovering at a Duluth hospital, the Zenith Dredge Co. told the News-Herald.

No one seems to know exactly how the accident happened, except that he fell to the floor of the engine room and received head injuries.

• Ed Cavanaugh recently went to visit the remnants of the old Spalding mine. It was located on the end of Spalding Lake and reached by paddling to the north side of Crystal Lake and walking over a small ridge.

Some of the machinery bearing the date 1870 is still in good shape, he said.

• Oscar Lindskog left Monday on the America
for the Dakota grain fields.

• Some of the high school pupils, assisted by Superintendent Qualheim, have fixed up a tennis court on the school grounds.

• Theaverage citizen’s idea of how to run a paper is this: Print the news, always, no matter what it is — but always and only when it is on the other fellow.

• Thelittle son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrert was hurt quite badly last week by falling down a stairway. The family left Tuesday for Minneapolis, where the child will receive medical attention by a specialist.
