JUNE 25, 2001

The U.S. Forest Service conducted the fifth controlled burn of blowdown timber along the Gunflint Trail last week. The Loon Peninsula burn burned 218 acres of blowdown wood. Other burns this summer have been at Moose Pond at Round Lake Road (15 acres), Flour Lake next to Golden Eagle Resort (38 acres), Kings Road near the entrance to South Gunflint Lake Road (340 acres) and Poplar Lake at the boat landing (58 acres).

JUNE 24, 1991

A plan to establish a subordinate governmental service district for Andersonville, east of County Road 6 (3 ½ miles west of Grand Marais) was approved by the Cook County Board of Commissioners. It will be the first such small special tax district in the county. The only similar special districts in the county now are the four larger fire districts.

The Cook County Council on Aging has given the go-ahead to a committee to explore the possibility of purchasing the City Limits Restaurant facility. The group has been brainstorming and dreaming about a “Generations” facility that could meet the needs of a wide variety of groups. Ideas such as a lunch program that would be open to all ages as well as senior citizens. Pool tournaments between teens and seniors. A place to hold the county fair or workshops. The current facility for senior citizens is not large enough and there is a plan to add on — but even then it might not be adequate.

JUNE 22, 1961

Sixteen Grand Marais people enjoyed an Isle Royale outing, leaving Sunday morning and returning Tuesday. They sailed all the way around the island, camping at the shelters and at Belle Isle. They had beautiful weather.

Investigators of the State Department of Labor & Industry, Division of Women and Children, inspected businesses in Grand Marais last week for compliance with the state laws regulating the employment of women and minors. Payroll and personnel records were examined for observance of minimum wage rates, maximum hours of work and child labor regulations. Physical inspections of sanitation facilities and general working conditions in local business were also made.

100 YEARS AGO
JUNE 23, 1921

The regular June term of the District Court for Cook County opened Monday, with Judge C.R. Magney presiding. There were no criminal cases, and only 23 civil actions on the calendar, some of which were settled out of court, reducing the work to a minimum and court adjourned at 5 p.m. Tuesday after a two-day session.

John LaPlante was arrested and convicted by a jury of driving a car while intoxicated. His license was revoked and he was fined $10 and costs. He cannot drive a car for three months.

Victor Skoog received a 1,500-pound horse on the boat from Duluth last night. He will use it on his farm.

Some men from the Palatine Mining and Development Company came up to put some deeds on record. The company is preparing to mine at the Paulson Mine on the Gunflint.
