Square dancers from throughout the Midwest and provinces of Ontario and Manitoba, Canada, started dosey-doeing into Grand Marais June 7, and four days later, 1,324 dancers were registered for the 2001 Minnesota State Square and Round Dance Convention, officially doubling the town’s population. Called “Swing and Sway in Grand Marais,” the convention found dance space in the two Cook County High School gymnasiums, the high school cafeteria, the Community Center and 4H building. Some 28 callers sang out promenades and instructions to the very able dancers, who, unlike many onlookers, could decipher the calls and moved in unison, smiling as they glided and twirled across the floor.
The 25-year-old Whole Foods Cooperative is planning to move into larger digs. It is a move that has been eagerly awaited and pursued for three years. A purchase agreement for the building which now houses a kayak business was signed June 8 by the cooperative board and accepted by the owners of Cascade Kayaks. It is anticipated that the move will occur in the late fall.

Merchants in violation of the Grand Marais Street and Sidewalk Ordinance will be notified by the city that they are transgressors. A number of merchants and businesses in the downtown area have placed flowerpots and benches on the sidewalk in violation of the ordinance, city council was told. A permit is required.
After little more than a year of operation, the Grand Portage Casino is expanding for a second time and will offer Las Vegas-style blackjack in just a week. So far, the casino’s success has rubbed off on Grand Portage Lodge and helped fuel the entire economy of the east end of the county. With the expansion, the casino will have six blackjack tables, 162 slot machines, and four days of bingo. The expansion will also mean extra jobs — at least 24 new people.

The new owners at Flutereed Store, Hovland, were pleased about the large turn-out both days to their open house invitation. There were five drawings every hour, and on Saturday the grand prize went to George Johnson. People from all over the county stopped in, and numerous Canadian visitors came. David Hess and Clarence Knutson purchased the store in April and have moved their families to Hovland.
Mr. and Mrs. Harold Benson, taking a drive up the Colvill Road last Sunday, saw an albino partridge. It was almost all white with red eyes. They watched it for quite some time. They marked the spot and hope to get another look at it.
Merlin Zimmerman found several rocks near his house that have fossils plainly marked in them, some shell fossils and some bug fossils. Some of the markings measured several inches across.

JUNE 11, 1931
Parker O. Anderson, Extension Forrester, will visit Cook County to promote the planting of farm shelterbelts, farm wood-lot management, and the means for providing stock for planting at prices farmers can afford.
Baseball season opens Sunday. The newly organized ball club of Grand Marais, under the name of “Shiners” will play the Mineral Center team Sunday at the Mineral Diamond. The game will start at 2 p.m. sharp.

JUNE 16, 1921
Nine were called Saturday morning to help put out the fire between Greenwood and Northern Light lakes. They extinguished the flames with the help of the rain.
A store and filling station has been started at the Pigeon River bridge by M.M. Arnold, the customs officer stationed there last year. Mrs. Arnold will live there this summer and look after the business, Mr. Arnold being in the Duluth office.
Sheriff L.H. Lien and Deputy Sam Zimmerman Jr. were called to South Brule Tuesday night by a man who claims to have been held up and robbed. He had a bullet wound in the arm to substantiate his statement. The affair is being investigated.
A crowd from Grand Marais attended the dance at Mineral Center last Saturday.
