More than half (34 out of 53) of the Cook County High School seniors who graduated on June 2 did so with academic honors. Valedictorian Tim Beaster encouraged them to look forward, that the best was yet to come.
Jeff Foster Trucking announced that it has recently purchased the truck fleet from Hedstrom Lumber. Foster will also be operating a log scaling and reloading facility for Hedstrom Lumber at its Superior site, serving Hedstrom’s Wisconsin log suppliers.
The high school baseball season came to an end for the Cook County Vikings on May 31 when the Vikes lost to Silver Bay and Barnum. The losses knocked the Vikings out of the double-elimination tournament and ended their season at 4-14.

In a move that could provide a construction site for a proposed public housing complex in Grand Marais, the city council has authorized updating the abstract of a tract of land on County Road 7, west of the hospital. In taking the action. Council indicated it will be willing to sell the site to a group of developers at the fair market value price. Tentative plans call for construction of a 24-unit apartment complex that would include low- and moderate-income rental units, plus market rate apartments. A recent demographic study shows the need for 150 additional rental units in this area.
A coalition of six environmental organizations has filed a petition for a contested case hearing in LTV Steel Company’s bid for an air quality permit to reopen its 225-megawatt generating plant at Taconite Harbor near Schroeder. “This is distressing news for the company,” said a Minnesota Pollution Control Agency director. She pointed out that a contested case hearing could delay the granting of a new air quality permit for six to eight months.

Several men have started the work of improving the area adjacent to the hospital grounds, and brushing has been done for several days this week. There is still much to do.
The local Cub Scout pack 167 met at the village trailer park recently and had as their guests the Cub Scouts of the Taconite Harbor den. They enjoyed Indian dances and the good marshmallow roast.
Bob Zimmerman, who is building a cabin on Gunflint Lake, has come to the conclusion that the black flies have become immune to DDT and as a result are twice as powerful as usual.
90 YEARS AGO
JUNE 4, 1931
Mrs. Cornelius Hall of Lutsen and Mrs. Christ Nicolaisen of Good Harbor Hill have kindly consented to serve as local leaders of the 4H Clubs in their communities. 4H projects this year include sewing, breadmaking, cake-making, canning, gardening, potato growing, dairy calf raising, forestry, poultry, junior-leadership, and room furnishing. Enrollment this year has climbed to 273 4H kids in Cook County.
Thirteen senior high school graduates received their diplomas last Thursday evening. In recent years, there has been less emphasis placed on a graduation ceremony for the eighth-grade level of school. Traditionally, the eighth-grade level has been seized as an opportunity for dropping out of school.

JUNE 9, 1921
Andrew Swanson of Maple Hill is disposing of his 1920 potato crop by selling to Grand Marais people.
Ranier Ellquist is recovering from a sore lip which he got in a ball game about a week ago. A foul tip was the cause of his trouble.
Joseph Anderson of Maple Hill returned from South Dakota last evening. He had been away two months. He drove up in a Dodge car which he purchased while away.
Miss Olga Soderberg returned last week from Wright, where she has been teaching for the past two years.
The Maple Hill farmers have their crops planted and a number of them are now working on the road for the town, the work being done on the road leading to the Andrew Johnson farm on East Maple Hill.
