The Joint Cook County/Grand Marais Economic Development Authority (EDA) was informed that recent rainstorms have had a major impact on business at Superior National Golf Course and the season hasn’t even begun yet. According to Manager Mike Larson, flooding of the Poplar River washed away the only bridge that connects the course to nine of its 27 holes. The bridge was built in 1973 by the Cook County Snowmobile Club. However, since the construction of the new nine holes at Superior National, the bridge has also served golfers.

A special meeting of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency board will be held in June to decide the fate of LTV Steel Mining Company’s 225-megawatt coal-fired generating plant at Taconite Harbor, The company maintains it still has a legal right to start up the plant under the old permit. However, according to an MPCA staff member, the agency has asked LTV to be a “corporate good citizen” and wait for the new permit. The plant has been shut down since 1982 when Erie Mining Company, the former owner, closed it and began purchasing electricity from Minnesota Power to operate its Hoyt Lakes iron mining and pelletizing operations.
Grand Marais streets will be graced with American flags on some holidays through a cooperative community improvement project of the Grand Marais Lions and American Legion Post 413. An initial inventory of 24 flags will be purchased for Bear Tree Park. Additional flags will be memorial donations.
Fred Rosecrans of Gunflint Lake decided he was the first summer home person to return for his six-month stay.

Four local boys caught 28 speckled trout through the ice on a remote lake north of Hovland. The catch averaged better than two pounds per fish —and the trout had red meat!

MAY 12, 1921
Mistaking his own voice for that of a burglar, a resident called out “Police!” He awoke to hear weird noises, he said, but on due reflection came to the conclusion that he had a nightmare.
David Carriboo and Peter Stevens came in from their trapping quarters on May 4. They brought 84 beaver skins besides weasel, mink, and muskrat skins. The beaver pelts brought $8 to $20 each.
H.L. Bailey of Parkers Prairie, former owner of the local electric light plant, has been in Grand Marais several days helping with the installation of the larger engine and dynamo.
