Officials from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources gave the Cook County Board an update on proposed improvements at Cascade State Park. The plan, when completed, will spell out the proposed improvements for the park over the next 15 to 20 years. Most significant among the recommendations is the relocation of the campground. Other changes include the alignment of a proposed bike trail with a highway underpass; creation of a small highway underpass to a historic wayside exhibit so as to curtail pedestrian traffic on the highway; and natural resource management plans that would encourage the growth of white pines and cedars.

After considerable discussion in prior meetings, the Grand Marais City Council decided on December 13 to begin charging rent to the North House Folk School. The school will be charged $1,000 per month for a year, and then $1,500 per month for a year after that. A third condition of the motion stated that the rent would be looked at again at the end of that time. The folk school has been occupying city-owned buildings on the lakeshore in Grand Marais for three years, and during that time has been charged $500 per month. However, that $500 was in-kind due to improvements that the school made to the buildings.

Does the Sawbill Trail need to be upgraded to highway standards and eventually paved? That is a question which has been asked by some Tofte residents since the multi-phase construction project was begun last fall. “I haven’t found anybody who is excited about it,” said local County Commissioner Gene Utecht. “You could describe this project as somebody’s want and nobody’s need.” The project is intended to improve safety, lower maintenance costs and aid loggers.

“Treat every gun as though it was loaded,” is a lesson two young boys learned last Sunday evening. Harry Dryseth has been in the local hospital all week. Fortunately, the bullet did not hit a bone, but the flesh wound in Harry’s leg is being watched for possible infection. Harry and his friend were watching TV when the boys saw the gun. They thought it was not loaded. Harry found out otherwise. Hopefully, Harry and his friend learned a lesson too: don’t leave loaded firearms laying around.

Interior lakes in the Superior National Forest, hidden far from traveled roads, will be surveyed this winter in a five-year program to increase the fish life in all lakes in the region. Rangers are busy organizing crews of the Civil Conservation Corps (CCC). Camp workers at all of the 20 camps in the forest will continue the work which was started three years ago in 1932.

Rex Green of the highway department of St. Paul made a business trip to Grand Marais on Saturday in connection with the village water system. He was here to give the village authority to dig across the highway with water mains.
