• Dave and Krishna Woerheide of Border Designs in Lutsen have volunteered to repaint the bear sign at the Gunflint Trail entrance in Grand Marais. The city donated the paint and the Woerheides will donate the labor. The sign has fallen into disrepair in recent years.
• TheCook County courtroom was filled nearly to capacity on June 28 as spectators lined the gallery to watch Clarence and Phyllis Hammett outline and argue their case against the City of Grand Marais over the raise in the rates at the municipal campground before the summer of 1999. Due to the 20 percent Public Utilities Commission surcharge that was added to the rates of Recreation Park users at that time, seasonal rental costs went up $82 per month.

• Mayor Walt Mianowski announced Wednesday that the city has received preliminary approval from the IRRRB for financing of a multi-use recreational building at the golf course.
The building would include a dining and lounge area, a complete curling facility, men’s and women’s locker rooms, an observation deck and space for a pro shop. Final approval or denial is expected Sept. 1.
• With a construction time of only 70 days, the crews are racing toward a July 4 opening date for the new Gene’s IGA Foods.
Karen Lashinski explained that the Fourth is significant because it was 12 years ago July 4 that the old Gene’s IGA opened under ownership of the Lashinski family. Total employment is expected to be 20 to 25 fulland part-time; at the old store, which was destroyed by fire, it was about 15.

• Thefiresiren Monday evening at about 6 o’clock summoned help for a fire at a Maple Hill residence, where a small building burned and the surrounding area was threatened. The building was formerly a trailer house, but had served as a tool shed at present.
The fire was too far gone before help arrived, and nothing was saved. Fortunately, a new lawn mower and tiller were in use earlier that day and had not been put away yet.
Theorigin of the fireis not known.
• Coffeetime at TheVillager last Saturday afternoon brought many local as well as tourist visitors to the new downtown shop. The proprietors, Mrs. Bobby Johnson and Rita Portner, have been very busy during the past weeks, transforming the old post office building into a dress shop.
• Thehigh school officereports that the gymnasium floor will be finished July 5, and that the room will be ready for public use after that date.

• There will be a celebration of the national holiday at Grand Marais on July 5. Although there has not been any loudcolored advertising of the event, it is not going by default.
Committees of the Commercial Club and of the American Legion have the matter in hand and they want it made known to all that there will be fun galore in Grand Marais on the fifth.There will be a program of speaking, sports and fireworks. Come and help make the eagle scream.
• FOUND — Gentleman’s stick pin. Owner may have same by calling and proving ownership.
LOST — A suitcase between Two Harbors and Grand Marais. Finder please return to Herald
office, Grand Marais, and receive reward.
• Anyone can be thankful for what he gets. But few of us consider that we ought to be thankful for what we don’t get.
• A party of young people enjoyed a picnic supper on the rocks last Wednesday evening. All report such a good time that they decided to have more of them in the future.
