10 Years Ago · June 21, 1999 • TheGrand Marais City Council discussed what it saw as a can of worms at its regular meeting on June 14 when the owners of a downtown restaurant requested permission to allow consumption of beer and wine on the sidewalk in front of their business.

Theysaid they were making the request afternumerous customers had asked for the service. However, the city has an ordinance that prohibits consumption of alcohol on the public streets and sidewalks. • Theclearing of an area on 14th Avenue West in Grand Marais caused a bit of a ruckus early last week. The owners of two of the lots in the area, one across the way from the other, had asked the city to clear the undeveloped “street” area to the point where their driveways would be starting, and the street was cleared about 100 feet too far.

Theextra clearing took out about a dozen trees, and many people were angry.

20 Years Ago · June 19, 1989 • Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither will be the Lutsen Championship Golf Course. However, the project is still on track and construction will begin later this summer. • Consolidated Papers Inc. of Wisconsin Rapids has donated 34,600 acres of its Minnesota timberlands valued at $4.1 million to the Minnesota Trust For Public Land.

The distance from the company’s manufacturing operations in central Wisconsin is the principal reason why the company is disposing of the forest lands in Cook and Lake counties.

50 Years Ago · June 18, 1959 • A couple who recently stayed in Grand Marais, ages 45 and 46, were killed in a train-car crash south of McKinley Monday morning. They had been employed at the Lutsen Ranch for three and a half years.

The accident happened at 9:50 a.m. when the couple’s car stalled across a freight train track, and the train bore down on them before it could stop. Theman was hurtled 23 feet beyond the car, and his wife 17 feet. Both met death instantly. • Due to a reduction in funds for sponsoring groups for recreation in the county, a half-day program only will be offered starting July 1 for one month.

Swimming is planned for the children in the Grand Marais area afternoons. In the West End, playgrounds will be fixed up in lieu of a swim program this summer. Thesame is true in the East End. • Lately people have been asking what do you spray mosquitoes with.

There are three sprays that work pretty well. One is DDT — this is the old standby. Theother two are malathion and methoxychlor. Recently it has been found that a mixture of malathion and DDT seems to work better than either alone.

90 Years Ago · June 18, 1919 • Judge George H. Durfee, agent for the Grand Marais Real Estate and Improvement Co., has cleared the brush on several of the streets from St. Paul Avenue to the new state highway on the company’s own expense. They are about now ready for grading. • Albert Gilbertson, formerly of this village, but who has been employed in the Duluth steel plant for the past three years, returned to Grand Marais on last Wednesday’s boat and is now working in the Midway Service Station. • A citizens’ meeting was held last Friday evening to discuss plans for celebration of the Fourth of July. Committees were formed to take charge of the various phases of the celebration and efforts are being made to hire a brass band for the day.

A grand parade, arranged by J.C. Murphy, headed by the Goddess of Liberty, will be one of the chief features. • A party of 11 Fort William people autoed to Grand Marais Sunday and were guests at the Sterling Hotel.
