Cook County officials will soon install a weather transmitter in the Gunflint District to alert residents and campers of bad weather. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration transmitter will provide early storm warnings to people who own the $40 radios. The radios turn on automatically when a storm warning is issued.

The lodging tax figures for the first seven months of the year reflect a robust year for the lodging industry. Although the July totals were incomplete in all three districts, comparisons with the first seven months of 1999 show respectable growth in the Grand Marais, Gunflint Trail, and Lutsen-Tofte- Schroeder districts.

Voters in Grand Marais will face a real challenge in November. While only three positions — mayor and two council seats — are under contention, nine citizens have applied to appear on the ballot.

The Cook County Board expressed no interest in purchasing a 1.2-acre tract along the Flute Reed River in Hovland. The county had been contacted by the land’s owner to see if it was interested in purchasing the tract for $25,000. The property is along the east bank of the river from County Road 76 and Lake Superior. The Minnesota DNR had been trying to obtain a fisherman’s easement along both sides of the river for a price of $8 per foot. In response, the owner said he was unwilling to grant the easement, but offered to sell the property.

FROM HARPER’S WEEKLY A little more than twenty years ago (early 1880s), this notice appeared from a newspaper journal published in Dodge City: In view of the fact that we cannot pay the road tax of $10 assessed against us this year, we have been sentenced to confinement. Consequently, there will be no issue of this paper for the next three weeks. But, as the state will have to board us, we figure that we shall come out some $20 ahead.
