With wildfires raging out of control in thirteen western states, area firefighters have been called on to lend a hand. Currently, more than thirty U.S. Forest Service personnel have been assigned to fight the western fires, most either in Montana, Idaho or Wyoming. So far this year the fires have consumed an area larger than the state of Massachusetts. Because of the hot, dry conditions, the worst might be yet to come.

Mr. and Mrs, Ralph Moon of Taconite Harbor ran a hectic and futile race with the stork to the local hospital last Thursday morning. Ralph was driving 90 mph when it became apparent that even though he was flying fast, the stork was flying faster and a top speed of 105 mph was reached in some stretches of the 33-mile trip. When they reached Grand Marais and were turning off the highway and up the hill with only five blocks left to the hospital, the car stalled because of the overheated condition of the engine. Ralph then flagged a passing motorist who rushed Mrs. Moon to the hospital. A 9-pound, 4-ounce girl was delivered.

HUMAN BODIES CONDUCT ELECTRICITY The human body as a conductor or nonconductor is one of the latest topics of interest for the electricians. Investigations show variations in conductivity are due to the physiological condition of the subject. The magnitude of the resistance is dependent upon the hour of day, the place of measurement, and even upon the character of the subject’s last meal. Nervous persons and strong smokers and drinkers are found to have an extremely low resistance. The average value found for the resistance, as measured from band to band, is about 3000 ohms.
