20 YEARS AGO
JULY 24, 2000

Three well-known residents of the county have filed for the District 4 commissioner’s seat held by Wes Hedstrom. Hedstrom, of Maple Hill, did not file for re-election this year. The filers are Dale Bockovich, Gene Erickson and Carol Gresczyk. Walt Mianowski, county board chairman, is the only candidate in District 2.

30 YEARS AGO

JULY 16, 1990

The 1990 Rainbow Family national gathering at Barker Lake cost taxpayers about $300,000. The Forest Service treated the gathering as a disaster similar to a hurricane, flood or fire, and established an incident command team which was headquartered in the Village at Lutsen Mountains.

JULY 23, 1990

About two dozen Rainbows remained at Barker Lake last week, putting finishing touches on cleaning up the site. Garbage was stacked in big piles along the road. Recyclables were separated for pick-up. Other trash was awaiting a compactor. By late last week, nearly all the garbage had been removed from the site.

Beautiful Tom Lake, for many years a favorite picnic and fishing spot of Hovland residents, is now becoming a popular summer colony for many. To reach it, one must be adventurous enough to drive down “heart-breaker” hill, a long, steep hill with a sharp curve about half way of its length.

“The Hinges,” a newly formed stamp club in Grand Marais, now has 34 beginning stamp club members plus two adult persons: Mrs. Carl Sjoberg and Mrs. Jerry Randall. Charter membership cards were made by Mrs. Ruth Moore. Mrs. Harold Flavell said, “The stamp hobby can form an important bond of common interest between parents and children and countless happy hours are spent together learning about far-away lands.”

60 YEARS AGO
JULY 21, 1960

Ed Cavanaugh recently went to visit the remnants of the old Spalding mine. It was located on the end of Spalding Lake and reached by paddling to the north side of Crystal Lake and walking over a small ridge. Some of the machinery bearing the date 1870 is still in good shape, he said.

100 YEARS AGO
JULY 21, 1920

Oscar Lindskog left Monday on the America for the Dakota grain fields.

Some of the high school pupils, assisted by Superintendent Qualheim, have fixed up a tennis court on the school grounds.

WHEN SILENCE IS GOLDEN The best of us talk too much. The essence of power is reserve. Many a reputation has been built on silence. Many a one is spoiled through rushing pre-maturely and volubly into speech. It is safe to be silent when your words would wound. Keep still when your words will discourage.
