The Cook County courtroom was filled nearly to capacity on June 28 as spectators lined the gallery to watch Clarence and Phyllis Hammett outline and argue their case against the City of Grand Marais over the raise in the rates at the municipal campground before the summer of 1999. Mary Dickerson, a small strong and wiry woman of 79 years, has slept standing up, leaning against a wall, for more than fifty years. In her twenties, she suffered from a morphine addiction that caused her to have terrible dreams. She discovered that less morphine and sleeping sitting up diminished the bad dreams. Standing and leaning against a wall as she slept did not allow for any dreaming. Mary believes that her conversion at a religious revival also helped cure her morphine addiction.
