APRIL 10, 2000

A mama bear and three cubs caused quite a stir at Lutsen Mountains when they ran across a ski race course during the Spring Series races last year. The race event was quite a success this year even though there were no bears.

APRIL 30, 1990

Restaurant owner Stan Bautch installed a new business sign last week. City Limits Restaurant and Lounge will open May 16 and specialize in dinners. There will be live entertainment five nights per week.

From Justine Kerfoot’s column: For years in the past we always relied on George Plummer here on the Gunflint and on Saganaga they relied on Billy Powell and more recently Dickie Powell to determine the safety of the ice in the spring and fall. In the spring when Dickie radios down and says “I’m putting my snowmobile away” everyone else follows suit. May 28, 1990

“Boulder Park,” located at the peninsula entry to the Coast Guard station, became a reality during a dedication ceremony May 19. The mini-park was celebrated by the Woodlands Committee, whose members said the effort took more than a year of “planning, meeting, cajoling and some begging.”

The Grand Marais Coast Guard station reopened yesterday as a threeman detachment launched its new 25-foot patrol boat and moved into quarters at the station. The Coast Guard will man the station full-time during the boating season and will rotate three-man crews every two or three weeks.

MAY 26, 1960

Village Marshal John M. Blackwell warns that 90-minute parking limits are now in force and that he will proceed to enforce the parking ordinance regarding same.

Norman Howard has taken on the distributorship of the latest in baby feeders. In appearance the “Infafeeder” has the look of a cake decorator. However, the hole end of the feeder is supplied with a nipple from which the baby sucks the food. No more spoon-feeding — the baby operates on his own! It has many advantages over the old system and feeds such foods as cereals and strained foods. The inventors said they got the idea from a ballpoint pen.

Judge C.R. Magney, who vacationed in New Zealand last winter, has returned to his summer home here.

Karen Holte is finishing her second year as kindergarten teacher at Buhl, Minnesota, and will teach in the Oakland, California public schools next fall.

100 YEARS AGO
MAY 26, 1920

A large number of Canadians took advantage of the holiday last Monday, that being Victoria Day over there, for a motor trip over the North Shore road. The hotels here were taxed to the limit Sunday and Monday, most of them visitors from the other side.
