MAY 7, 1990

A group of West End residents appeared before the District 166 school board at its regular meeting to ask that fourth grade be added to Birch Grove Elementary School. School Superintendent Warren Rolek has recommended to the board not to add the additional grade because it would require a half-time teaching position at a cost of $15,000.

From the Chamber of Commerce News: people were invited to “Look out your back door. If it isn’t pretty, clean it up! The Chamber had a spring clean-up day on May 12.

50 YEARS AGO
APRIL 2, 1970

Pennies from heaven? No, it’s tree seeds falling from the sky! Last week the Forest Service planted 6 million tree seeds in the snow just east of the Sawbill Trail near Barker Lake. A single engine Cessna airplane did the job on 200 acres of former brush land. The tiny seeds fell from the plane into the March snow. When the snow has melted, the seeds will be in contact with the soil. By July they will have taken root and their tiny green tops will be visible. A new forest will be on its way.

Engineman Fireman Mike J. Backlund, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Backlund, Grand Marais, was one of 30 crewmen who stepped off Utility Landing Craft 1477 March 16 as the cargo craft was turned over to the Vietnamese Navy by U.S. Naval Support in Da Nang, Vietnam. Backlund reported to Vietnam on January 2, 1970 and assisted the chief engineer on the Utility Landing Craft 1477.

60 YEARS AGO
MAY 5, 1960

The smelting has been terrific at the mouths of many rivers running into Lake Superior. A number of trail people have gone down to join in the fun. A couple of scoops with the smelting net, have in most instances produced a pail of fish. They are delicious fried crisp in a pan of deep fat.

MAY 5, 1920

Mrs. Horace Bartlette has had fine luck this spring in hatching chicks with an incubator.

Work started Monday on the Gunflint Road. Axel E. Berglund is locating the road and George Bayle is in charge of the construction work.
