North Shore steelhead anglers are catching more fish — and seeing fewer fishermen — than they were in 1990. Minnesota DNR creel census data indicates that steelhead fishing success steadily improved during the ’90s, with a significant boost during the past two years.

The Clarke’s Nutcracker, a western bird species, was sighted on the Gunflint Trail at Myrl Heston’s bird feeder. This bird is about a foot long, has a gray body with black wings and has the actions of a crow. This is an unusual bird to find in our forests. Reported by Raymond Naddy on the Superior National Forest.
From Justine Kerfoot’s On The Gunflint Trail column dated January 29, 1970: Billy Powell sent in the following report: Yesterday we looked across the bay on Saganaga and over on the south shore there were two people walking pulling a toboggan (12 below at the time with strong west winds to make it feel worse). It turned out it was two boys from Minneapolis walking from Grand Portage to Fort Francis. They had snowshoes and seemed well dressed but we shivered just looking at them. When they left here, after warming up indoors, melting some slush off their toboggan, eating a warm meal and offering to work for what they received, they headed west right into the wind with a sort of victory cheer as they took off.

Elvin Deadrick this week announced that he has established a laundromat, a serve-yourself wash and dry service located in the Arrowhead Creamery building. The equipment is pretty well established and hook-ups are being made so the service is expected to commence immediately. The service is known as Speed Wash, a nationwide company. The equipment, which includes 16 automatic washers and five dryers and a washer-extractor, along with the remodeling of the room, represents an investment of close to $17,000.

Ole Krutzer, a fisherman living east of Grand Marais, was rescued by the Coast Guard. Ole was rowing home and got caught in an ice jam that was forcing him out into the big lake. Neighbors on shore could see that he was in trouble. After rescuers crossed a difficult passage over the jammed ice, a rope line was shot out to him with a shoulder gun. The cold weather made the rescue even more difficult.

The gasoline boat Alvina arrived in the harbor Tuesday evening with a load of freight and mail from Two Harbors. This is the first boat of the season. They expect to carry the mail for a while, until the roads get in better condition at least. All the other boats wintered in Duluth and it may be some time before they are running.
C.J. Johnson returned from St. Paul Tuesday. He reports that the state is going to commence work on the Gunflint Road, an appropriation of $30,000 having been made for work on this end. The residents and property owners of the county have looked forward for a long time for the opening up of the northern part of the county to travel and it now seems their long cherished dreams are to come true.
