20 YEARS AGO
MARCH 20, 2000

Students at the Cook County elementary schools have been gathering “Pennies for Patients,” and to date have accumulated $1,064.24! The schools, along with others in Minnesota, were encouraged to scrape together all of their pennies in an effort to help support research of leukemia and other related issues.

MARCH 19, 1990

The IGA building, which was gutted by a Saturday night fire last November, will be razed this week. The Lashinski family, owners of the property, has contracted with Ed Thoreson and Co. to remove the building. Gene Lashinski and his family are currently working out details to build a new IGA store in Grand Marais as quickly as possible.

MARCH 17, 1960

Mrs. Andy Jacobsen spoke on fluorite at the Rock Meeting Saturday.

The Colvill Garden Club is again sponsoring the Birdhouse Building Contest among the county’s school children, and is offering attractive money prizes for their efforts.

90 YEARS AGO
JANUARY 9, 1930

A truck driven by Clarence Tofte on its way to Grand Marais crashed with the state snow plow injuring Elvia Engelsen. Injuries were not serious. Miss Engelsen was taken to Duluth on the morning bus.

FEBRUARY 13, 1930

Lloyd K. Johnson of Grand Marais, student at the University of Minnesota, was honored to be chairman of a committee planning the 39th Annual Junior Ball.

FEBRUARY 20,1930

The American Bankers’ Association reports a severe drop in savings. Records have been kept for twenty years so this is the first documented recession in the nation’s savings accounts in banks. The shrinkage of savings amounted to over 195 million dollars on the basis of figures for the financial year ending June 29, 1929.

One year earlier, the reported increase in savings was 2 billion 300 million dollars. That financial year, closing June 30, 1928, registered the largest gain in savings deposits in banks and trusts ever recorded in the United States. What a difference a year makes!

The lure of easy profits to be made in the stock market was one of the important factors draining away savings and decreasing deposits.

(The stock market crash occurred on October 29, 1929.)

100 YEARS AGO
MARCH 17, 1920

The rain and warm weather of the last week have put a stop to the logging business where they have a long winter sleigh haul. Those whose timber is close to shore are still operating.

While dynamiting in a gravel pit near Luverne, Fred Skreen was struck on the top of the head by a big stone. He was taken to a hospital where his condition was reported serious.
