The home and garage of W.C. Smith of Schroeder burned to the ground early this morning as a result of a fire said to have started from a furnace explosion. Occupants of the house awoke to find the lower part of the house a mass of flames, which spread rapidly through the frame structure, driven by the high wind, and rendered escape highly difficult.
Indeed,, the occupants had difficulty in leaving the burning building and were forced to leave in such haste that the small amount of clothing that they were able to carry with them was not sufficient to protect their bodies against the severe cold. Several of them suffered frozen faces and feet before they were able to reach the shelter of nearby homes.

Ice was forming on the lake so rapidly that it was necessary to remove the nets at once but the danger to the fishermen was so great that it was thought best to have aid close at hand.
