Near the end of an almost six-hour meeting on Dec. 22, the county board whittled a potential 2010 levy increase of 6.93 percent down to 4.69 percent. The maximum allowed by the state in 2010 would be $6,013,324, but the county reduced it to $5,887,152, a savings of $126,172.

The Tofte Town Board decided to send a letter to the Arrowhead Regional Development Commission in support of a rock cairn sign similar to several others designating towns along Highway 61. The $20,000-plus price is ridiculously high, said supervisor Paul James, but grant money will fund most of it.

DEC. 27, 1999

On a clear night with 20-below temperatures, the last thing citizens of Cook County want is a power outage. But a power outage is what they got, countywide, on the night of Dec. 21. A spokesperson for Arrowhead Electric Cooperative said the outage was caused when off-peak heating systems kicked in for the night, and the extra demand overloaded the substation on Maple Hill.

The city of Grand Marais will no longer manage the outdoor ice rinks due to budget changes. Cook County will assume the responsibility for rink management under the auspices of the Community Center. Thanks to the Amateur Hockey Association, two rinks will be flooded and maintained throughout the winter.

50 YEARS AGO
DEC. 25, 1969

Fifty acres of Grand Portage Band land were cleared this fall for planting next spring. The land clearing was done under contract for $28 per acre.

Pvt. Danny Ansello was home on furlough and will now be stationed in Germany.

Greg Olson, who was 10 on Dec. 15, had to go to the local hospital that day for an appendectomy. But he is now at home and getting along fine. Greg is a fourth grader, and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Olson.

90 YEARS AGO
DEC. 26, 1929

Two Grand Marais boys were injured here last Monday evening when struck by a car driven by Peter LeSage. One of the boys was his own son, Calvin, and the other was Teddy Wishcop. The latter was the more seriously injured, both his legs being broken above the knees, one of them also broken at the ankle.

The Little Marais post office was destroyed by fire last week. The building and equipment were a total loss. The fire started about noon last Saturday, presumably from an overheated stove. No one was in the building when the fire started.
