DEC. 12, 2009

Schroeder Township supervisors said they still hope to withdraw from the Tofte-Schroeder Sanitary Sewer District, but there has been no word from the attorney working on the withdrawal process. In the meantime, the board nominated Charlie Muggley to serve on the TSSSD board, saying it was in the township’s best interest to have a representative on the sewer board.

The Cook County High School Nordic Vikings are preparing for another year of fun and racing competition, with 10 meets scheduled throughout northeast Minnesota. The Vikings have had quite a bit of success in recent years, and nearly the entire team from last year returns.

DEC. 13, 1999

Under the guidance of Jim Haine, a retired forester, a committee of city park board members will begin work on development of a long-range tree-planting plan for Grand Marais. About $1,500 is available for tree-planting in next year’s budget.

The Grand Marais City Council voted unanimously to pay for the videotaping of Cook County board meetings. The taping will be done by PAC-13’s Holly Nelson. Nelson’s proposal asked for $100 per month to tape the meetings, and $25 per copy to be left at the library for public use. The issue of videotaping the county board meetings has been raised often over the past year. Most candidates for county commissioner last year said they favored the videotaping of meetings.

DEC. 11, 1969

Gunflint Lake has 9 inches of snow on top of the ice and ice is only 2 inches thick! Myrl Heston said there’s open water on the Canadian side, and people should be aware of the ice conditions.

Lights were off for two hours last Sunday afternoon, but that didn’t bother Santa much at Joynes Store. He just took his trusty old flashlight and managed real well. A number of children found their way to Santa, but many of them hope to visit Santa next Sunday afternoon when he will be at the store again.

By popular request, the lutefisk and lefsa supper will be served again at Tofte. The men and women of Zoar Lutheran Church plan and do all the work at the Edgewater Inn for this event.

90 YEARS AGO

DEC. 12, 1929

Miss C.A. Phillips, government nurse, came to Grand Portage Saturday, driving from Nett Lake that day. On the way from Mineral Center she encountered a stretch of snow-drifted road, and unable to secure a team, she decided to shovel her way along, rather than leave her car on the road in the icy weather. She got to the village at about 4 o’clock and found a number of very sick people. She was detained a few days longer than she has been accustomed to stay on her regular visits.

A second five-ton Holt caterpillar tractor and snow plow arrived this morning from Duluth to be used on the Gunflint Trail.

First practices at basketball were held this week. Two local village teams are expected to organize.
