U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested a suspected smuggler on Sept. 9 after the Grand Marais station was contacted by the Grand Portage Pigeon River Port of Entry concerning several suspicious persons exiting a vehicle near the Grand Portage State Park. The agents responded to the area and encountered the vehicle. The driver was a fugitive illegal alien from El Salvador who had apparently transported and dropped off four other suspected illegal aliens near the Canadian border. He was taken into custody, and Canadian authorities were able to locate and apprehend the four people who had crossed into Canada; they were determined to be from Mexico and Honduras.

The county board voted to spend $3,300 to inspect the Pine River bridge (between McFarland and Little John lakes) at the end of the Arrowhead Trail in Hovland. County Engineer Shae Kosmalski said the bridge is in “below average condition,” and will probably need to be replaced next year. Kosmalski noted that the average life span of a bridge is 50 years, and this one is 50 years old.

A 44-year-old Bloomington man was refused entry into Canada at 1:45 a.m. because of his apparent state of intoxication and past felony criminal record. Canadian Customs officials also discovered several knives in the man’s car during a routine search and sent him back to the U.S. side of the border until sheriff ’s deputies arrived. When he attempted to flee, leading deputies on a 10-mile chase at speeds in excess of 100 mph, the suspect collided with one of the pursuing squad cars, causing major damage to both vehicles.

County Attorney Bill Hennessy told the county commissioners that they cannot forbid videotaping of their meetings, but they could restrict the way in which taping occurs.
