What was previously the edge of WTIP Community Radio’s parking lot will sometime this summer become a food source for local residents. As the nation moves toward greater energy efficiency in tough economic times, some Cook County residents have been thinking about the possibility of growing more food locally instead of importing it. Thanks to a $9,000 grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the Center for Community Engagement, WTIP and the Northwoods Food Project have joined forces to turn that possibility into a reality.
The Grand Marais-Cook County Airport is among five airports in northeast Minnesota that have been awarded over $2.2 million in grants from the Federal Aviation Administration. The local facility will receive $95,000 to conduct an environmental impact study for a new runway. The improvement is needed to allow fire-fighting planes to land in the event of an emergency; the project will widen the current runway and lengthen it from about 4,200 feet to 5,000 feet.

The Cook County Women’s Club has announced that it will disband as of this summer, with no fuss or fanfare after 35 years of existence. On June 5, the officers of the Women’s Club sent a letter to all current members, now numbering 43, explaining that no activities had taken place for two years and the officers believed the time has come to dissolve it.
Cook County Engineer Chuck Schmit was on hand at the Grand Marais PUC’s regular meeting to discuss the realignment of the Gunflint Trail. While the need for the PUC to plan underground infrastructure early in the realignment process was uncontested, there was discussion of the cost of such planning. Engineering costs for the project combined with the actual construction of the sewer and water infrastructure are expected to be roughly $162,000.
50 YEARS AGO JULY 3, 1969
Plans are set for burning a small area of black spruce slash adjacent to the Gunflint Trail, about 20 miles north of Grand Marais. Five other burns are planned this summer in Lake County.
The Grand Marais Village Council has determined to call a village election on Aug. 19 for the purpose of determining whether the Village Council should be empowered to issue on-sale liquor licenses to private parties. Such action is made possible by a law enacted by the Minnesota Legislature in the 1969 session.
This is some sort of record: For July 1 the temperature dipped to 34 degrees and there was white frost on some of the roofs of Maple Hill homes. The gardens seem to be at a standstill waiting for warmer weather.
90 YEARS AGO JULY 4, 1929
A footsore hungry lad of 9 wandered up to the home of John Nelson at Maple Hill Monday evening at about 6 o’clock after being lost in the woods since noon Sunday. The Duluth boy had been fishing in the Cascade River at Good Harbor Hill in company with his brother who is 11 and his parents. According to the boy, he and his brother were fishing near each other when he decided to move on down the stream.
An eaves trough and rain barrel have been added to the library. The cost was paid by the fines.
Van Johnson has built a new soft drink and confectionary stand near the Trading Post which is already open for business.
Rudolph Anderson has left Grand Marais and will be employed as an oiler on one of the boats.
Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Spellman and children, of Oak Park, Illinois, are here for the summer. Mr. Spellman is a painter who comes here every season to enjoy the seclusion of his cabin at Chicago Bay. He now has a beautiful log cabin studio where he does much of his painting.
